Megger DRLO 100, DRLO 200, DRLO 600

These are digital microhmmeters. They are small and do not weigh more than 15 kg. They test currents ranging from 10A to 500 A DC. They have a memory on board which can be used for 300 test results as well as for notes and it has a RS232 port that can be used to download stored results or it could be used to send the output real time to the printer. There is an alphanumeric keypad which allows the user to set the current directly by typing the value. The instruments come with 5m test leads as well as software which can be used for downloading.

These instruments measure resistance between 01. Micro ohms and 1 ohm at high currents. They are versatile and they provide test currents ranging from 10 to 600 amps based on the load resistance as well as the supply voltage. There is the continuous mode which the users can set for monitoring resistance over a long period of time. In this the leads are to be connected and the test current needs to be selected and the test button is to e pressed. The current is continuously passed and the voltage is measured at 2 second intervals till the button is pressed to stop the test.

The Normal mode consists of connecting the leads and selecting the current and pressing Test. The current gets ramped to the desired levels, is held for 2 seconds and ramped down. This takes a total of 7 seconds.

Auto mode consists of the user selecting the current, connecting the leads and pressing the Test button. The lamp with flash to show that it is ready to be tested. When the leads are connected the test starts. In order for a repetition, the contact needs to be broken and contact remade.

The maximum continuous test time is more than 60 seconds at 600 A.

Megger DRLO 10

Megger DRLO 10 are low resistance ohmmeters and they are able to measure resistances of the 0.1 micro ohms to 2 kilo ohms. These instruments provide a test current of a maximum 10 Amps and this gets automatically selected based on the resistance which is being tested. However, the person can override the automatic selection and thus they are able to select their own test current.

The LCD display and indicators display not only the value but the units as well. The display has a clear backlight as well.

The measurement of resistance takes around 2.5 seconds and it consists of measuring the forward current as well as the reverse current and the average is displayed. The DLRO 10X shows not only all three values but also it can be limited to measuring just the forward current.

There is a rechargeable nickel metal hydride battery and this allows one thousand 10 amp tests to be completed on the same charge. The battery module has intelligent circuitry and that prevents damage done to the battery due to overcharging. There is also an indicator for the state of the battery. There is a removable lid which has a hinge at the back and this is held by magnetic catches at the top panel. The lid can be removed if it is required as well.

There are accidental connection protections for the instrument up to 600 V DC applied between any of the pairs of 4 terminals for max 10 secs. However, when there are such high voltages which are applied there could be internal heating and there could be errors upto 30 digits immediately. However, in 2-3 minutes the accuracy will be restored completed.

The test current is indicated through lamps which are on the left of the panel and the value measured is displayed in the main widow and on the right the units will be mentioned.

When there is an excess of 100 mV 50/50 Hz the noise lamp will get lit and this then is a signal that the accuracy may be compromised and so cannot be relied upon.

If there is external voltage which is applied to the terminals then the V lamp flashes. This warns the user that the item is live under test and it could be dangerous. In this condition the test is not to be performed. The V lamp is lit when there is more than 50 V which is applied between the current and the voltage terminal.  If the voltage is between just the voltage terminals or just between the current terminals then the 100 V peak lamp or 5V peak lamp is lit respectively. If all terminals are at a high voltage, the lamp will not operate.

If the I lamp is lit, it indicates that current more than 1 mA is flowing even after completion of the test. This means that there is discharging as the inductive load was tested. In such cases the current loop is not to be disconnected till the I lamp goes out.

Megger 247001

Megger 247001 is an equipment which is used to check resolutions to 0.1 micro ohms on a range of 599.9 micro ohms. The equipment is accurate as it has an accuracy of + or – 0.25% and this is fitted with a digital readout. It is practical and simple as well as a very reliable means of testing low resistance. These machines are used for quality control in production. They also operate on the 4 wire measurement principle. The lead and contact resistances are eliminated using this.

These digital low resistance ohmmeters meet the ANSI standards of safety requirements and there is no shock hazards that one can get from the instrument and so this can be used in wet and in outdoor environments.

Before using the instrument for the first time, the batteries should be charged. Also one should remember with regards the zero offset in 0-1 counts which are over 15-35 degrees Celsius, you will be able to get full accuracy using the forward and reverse switch in order to average the readings. There is also an internal zero adjustment which is provided.  In conditions of very low resistance, the reverse reading is possible by holding the forward reverse switch in the position which is the reverse one. The minus sign will be in the display when the reverse position is there. This however should be disregarded when the average is being calculated.

The on off switches are toggle switches which are used to energize the circuits and after the on off switch has been closed, post 2 seconds you will get the final reading.

The red LED display has 4 digits which are 0.5” high and it also has a decimal point as well as negative sign. If there is an over range input then the upper right segments of the digits flash.

The requirements of the test lead resistances are that there are no limitations to the potential leads and the current leads each has a nominal of 20 milliohms. The deviations affect the current however, the deviations do not affect the accuracy. The only exception is if it is very large in comparison with the measuring range.

The equipment consists of a battery condition meter and this meter is used to check the state of the batteries. The battery test however is only valid when the instrument operates on the range where it was meant to be tested on. If the meter shows a red zone, the batteries need to be charged overnight or for 14 hours. There is a separate charger unit which can be plugged into the receptacle on the measuring unit. The full charge takes 14 hours but charging can continue even when the instrument is in operation.

The charger and the measuring unit have a molded rugged case which has handles as well as removable hinged lids. This can also double up as a sun shield and the charger case too is similarly constructed and there is space in it where the test leads can be stored.

The RMO20TW Winding Ohmmeter is optimum for my use. This is a standalone machine and this instrument is PC controlled and is digital. It is designed for proper detailed analysis done on tap changers of on-load and they are used to measure resistances of test objects which are used all over in the power industry and other related industries.

The most common uses of RMO 20TW winding ohmmeters are for testing and commissioning as well as manufacturing of transformers, tap changers of the on-load kinds, the tap changers that are de-energized, the electrical motors as well as generators, cable splices as well as high current busbar joints.

It also helps to create the measurement of temperature and resistance in the heat run tests. This is usually done with DV-Win software.

The Megger MTO 300 comes in 2 versions. This is controlled by software which runs on my external PC or it can also run on a transformer test product which has a computer on board. This is totally self contained and it has the most powerful integration. The base model is so designed that it can be controlled remotely from the PowerDB software on the external PC or through the test product with the on board computer.

What I personally like is the 8.4 inch display which is colored and it has a full QWERTY keyboard. The VGA has a full color Transreflective screen and can be seen even in bright sunlight. It has an automated 8 terminal as well as 6 winding measurement capability. Thus it saves the users time, who can test all the 6 normal windings rather than having to disconnect and reconnect the leads for testing. It offers for simultaneous winding magnetization. These are used to test the operation of the tap changers and its auto demagnetization as well as automatic discharge is valued highly since it adds to the safety aspect.

The MTO 300 series also have the lead set of the Megger TTR300 series. The users who test both the winding resistance and turns ration can save money and time as only one set is required which has to be connected to the transformer.

The testing offered has 6 winding measurements and also 3 winding measurements of LV and HV windings as well as a single test for winding. The range of testing current is 10A and it has a maximum 50V which can be tested.

The safety feature is such that the discharge is safely done post completion of the test and when a lead is disconnected accidentally, or sometimes if the power is lost while the test is on.

The transformer also has a demagnetization feature so that the core is demagnetized when the test is completed. That way there is no high current inrush when again the transformer is used. This also works for testing the resistance.

This has a time saving feature where it can be used for winding magnetization simultaneously of HV as well as LV windings during testing.

This software is great when used with the MTO 300 series and this is easy to read. This helps to set up the speed instrument and test operations. It also has results which are comparable against the pass or fail limits of the users and it can be stored in XML data format. This allows historical data to be saved and ten results can readily be compared and trended using this.

It allows for simultaneous winding magnetization so that accurate and fast dc winding resistance can be measured of loads that have high induction.

The Vanguard Instruments WRM line is also a very popular instrument. They come in a range of current outputs ranging from 10, 20 and 40 Amp. They are easy to use and reliable units. They are also better priced than the Raytech units which are almost a comparable unit. The one down fall of the Vanguard unit is the size and line testing only ( No Battery). If you don’t mind a bigger case and like to save some money we definitely recommend the Vanguard WRM line for winding resistance testing.
